Neighborhood Info & Detours

This is neighborhood and detour information from the 2016 race.  We don't expect it to change too much for 2017, but we will update the information as soon as we receive it in the fall of 2017.

The Monster Dash is centered in some of the most popular and scenic portions of St. Paul.  As a result, we want to make sure residents and spectators know what to expect and how to get around when roads are closed.

Road Closure times:(see course map here)
Summit:  7:30-10:00 a.m. (But between Nina and Kellogg the road closes at 6:30 a.m.)
Mississippi River Blvd: 7:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Shepard Road:  7:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
We will do our best to get everything off the road as quickly as possible and St. Paul Police will open the roads behind the last runners.

Please see recommended detour information below.

Cathedral Area Detours (for residents, people who are going to the Cathedral, and employees in the area):
Click here to download PDF or see larger view.
From West:
Take 94 West to Dale Street Exit and take a right onto Dale Street. Take a left onto Selby Avenue and use that to get to your destination north of Summit Avenue.  If going to the Cathedral directly, continue on Selby Avenue all the way down to the Cathedral parking area.
From South:
Take 35E to Kellogg Blvd Exit.  Take a left on Kellogg Blvd. to John Ireland Boulevard.  Only the right lane will be open on John Ireland Boulevard and you can take it only to Marshall Avenue.  Take a right on Marshall Avenue and drive straight to Western Avenue, take a left.  Stay on Western Avenue until you intersect with Selby Avenue, then take Selby Avenue to get to your area or take a left to the Cathedral
From North or East:
Take 35E South or I-94 East and take the Marion Street Exit.  Take a left onto Kellogg Blvd.  Take a right, into the right lane of John Ireland Blvd. then take an immediate right onto Marshall Avenue.  Drive straight to Western Avenue, take a left.  Stay on Western Avenue until you intersect with Selby Avenue, then take Selby Avenue to get to your area or take a left to the Cathedral.

Crossing Summit Avenue during the race:
Summit Avenue between Nina and Mississippi River Boulevard will close at 7:30 a.m.  After that time officers will allow crossing at these intersections when it is safe to do so:  Dale, Lexington, Snelling, Cleveland, Fairview and Cretin.  You may have a bit of a wait, or no wait at all.  The Race starts at 8:30 a.m. so any time between 8:30 and 9:30 will likely have Summit Avenue very busy with runners.  Please plan accordingly.
If you are on the south side of Summit and need to get to the North side of Summit, we suggest to go to Jefferson Avenue and connect with Northbound Ayd Mill Road.
If you are on the south side of Summit and need to go west, take West 7th/Highway 5 westbound to Minneapolis.

Hidden Falls Detour:
Click here to download map PDF or see larger version or click on map at right
If exiting from Highway 5, and you want to go to Hidden Falls via Shepard Road/Mississippi River Boulevard, signs will guide you to follow Edgcumbe Road.  Take a left on Munster Ave., and another immediate left onto Norfolk Lane (which turns into Norfolk Ave.)  Follow that to Cleveland Ave. South and take a right.  Keep going all the way to Magoffin Avenue and take a left.  An officer will greet you at Mississippi River Boulevard and allow you to cross to Hidden Falls when it is safe to do so.

Shepard Road Detour:
Please take Highway 5/West 7th, which runs parallel to Shepard road and use as your detour.  Highway 5 can get you into Minneapolis or to the airport.
St. Paul Police will allow access to local businesses as well when it is safe.

Mississippi River Boulevard (MRB):
All of Mississippi River Boulevard is closed from just north of Summit Avenue to Highway 5 from 7:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.  We will be allowing an access lane for residences between Prior and Magoffin.  It is required that residents only travel north on this lane so everyone is going in the same direction.  Please plan accordingly.  Letters are being mailed out to this affected area.

Upper Landing Condos, Caribou Coffee, Anytime Fitness:
Upper Landing Park will be a gathering location for the 5K and a post-race party location.  Residents of Upper Landing Condos and folks who want to access the Caribou Coffee and Anytime Fitness will still be able to get to and from the area via Eagle/Old Chestnut during the race.  Shepard  Road will be closed from Highway 5 to Jackson, with the exception of the Eagle/Old Chestnut intersection being clear for traffic.  There will be no traffic on Shepard Road from Eagle during this event.  There is an expected delay in this area between 9:00-9:10 a.m.  If you can leave before or wait to leave after that time, it would be much appreciated.  We apologize for this inconvenience.

Bike/Trail Traffic:
The bike/pedestrian trail near Upper Landing runs parallel to our race finish line and is open to the public.  We will do the best we can to  keep this unobstructed for folks who plan to use the trail on Saturday morning.  However, please keep in mind you could face some race congestion.  Please feel free to continue on this trail or you could take a suggested detour that could bring you around the race without much trouble.  Traveling West on the trail, you can go to the left where the trail splits before Upper Landing Park and continue on the trail along the river until you can pop back up near Washington which is past our finish line and the congestion should subside in this area.  If you are traveling east (toward downtown) we suggest you do the same route.

Thank you for your patience.  If you are a resident who lives on Mississippi River Boulevard (south of Summit to Shepard) or on Summit Avenue and are affected by this closure, a letter is being sent to your home notifying you of the road closures.
